Cupra Born Facelift: Buttons Return to Volkswagen’s Electric Hot Hatch

14

The 2026 Cupra Born electric hatchback is set for a mid-cycle refresh, bringing back physical buttons for key controls—a move widely seen as a response to consumer complaints about overly minimalist interiors in recent Volkswagen Group models. The update includes four window switches and tactile buttons on the steering wheel, reversing a trend toward touch-sensitive surfaces that many drivers found frustrating.

Cupra’s Rise and the Born’s Position

Cupra, spun off from SEAT in 2018, has rapidly gained traction, outselling its parent company with a 32.5% sales increase in 2025, reaching a record 328,800 units. The Born, essentially an electric variant of the Volkswagen ID.3, is a key model in this expansion. The facelifted version will launch with a high-performance VZ trim from the start, mirroring the ID.3 GTX.

Interior Improvements and Tech Upgrades

While the cabin retains some touch-sensitive elements—specifically, the slider-style climate controls—the Born receives several improvements. A 12.9-inch touchscreen now runs Android, paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster (replacing the previous 5.3-inch display). Upgraded materials, illuminated door handles, and a new 10-speaker Sennheiser sound system contribute to a more premium feel.

The return of physical buttons is the most significant change. The removal of capacitive steering wheel controls and the addition of four window switches acknowledge a clear user preference for tactile feedback and ease of use. This represents a shift in approach after Volkswagen Group had previously pursued aggressive cost-cutting measures, including stripping interiors of physical controls.

Performance and Range Options

The 2026 Born will offer three trim levels:

  • Plus: 188 hp, 58-kWh battery, approximately 280 miles (450 km) of range.
  • Endurance: 228 hp, 79-kWh battery, estimated 373 miles (600 km) of range.
  • VZ: 322 hp, 79-kWh battery, also with an estimated 373 miles (600 km) of range, 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The VZ trim delivers 402 lb-ft of instant torque and features launch control. Updated wheels with wider tires (235 mm vs. 215 mm) enhance grip. One-pedal driving is now standard across all models.

Production and Market Expansion

Production will continue at Volkswagen Group’s Zwickau plant, with deliveries starting in the summer of 2026. Cupra had initially planned a US market entry by 2030 but has delayed its debut due to “evolving market dynamics,” pushing the launch into the next decade.

The reintroduction of physical buttons is a significant step toward addressing consumer feedback and improving the usability of Volkswagen Group’s electric vehicles. This suggests the company is listening to its customers and adjusting its strategy accordingly.
