Mercedes-Benz Confirms High-Performance CLE63 with V8 Engine

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch a new high-performance coupe under its exclusive Mythos sub-brand: the CLE63. Recent images reveal a camouflaged prototype undergoing winter testing in Sweden, strongly indicating the return of a V8 engine to the CLE lineup.

The Return of V8 Power

The CLE63 will feature a more aggressive design than existing models, with lower ground clearance, revised front and rear bumpers, a rear diffuser, and a prominent rear wing. Spy shots show a visible roll cage inside the test vehicle, alongside large trapezoidal exhaust outlets – further suggesting the use of Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8.

The automaker had previously announced it was developing a next-generation, high-tech electrified V8, and prototypes have since been observed during testing. This move is significant because the latest C63 AMG controversially switched to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. The CLE63’s V8 reaffirms Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to larger internal combustion engines, aligning with similar decisions by rival BMW.

Mythos Series: Exclusivity and Performance

The Mythos Series represents a strategic shift toward higher-margin vehicles. The first model, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed (based on the SL), was revealed in December 2024, with a limited production run of just 250 units. The PureSpeed delivers 430kW and 800Nm from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, reaching a top speed of 315km/h.

Mythos Series vehicles are sold exclusively through direct factory order at Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, emphasizing their exclusivity.

Timing and Availability

The CLE63 is expected to be unveiled later this year, with Australian showroom arrivals anticipated in 2027. The timing underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to performance vehicles despite increasing electrification trends.

This move signals a clear message: despite industry shifts toward electric power, demand for high-performance internal combustion engines remains strong. The Mythos Series caters to enthusiasts who prioritize raw power and exclusivity, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz’s position in the luxury performance segment.
