Wiedergeboren: Australian Restomod Porsche 911 Launches for $1.265 Million

The restomod industry, where classic cars are meticulously restored and upgraded with modern technology, has seen explosive growth in recent years, largely fueled by companies like Icon and Singer. Now, Australia has entered the scene with Wiedergeboren, a new outfit offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity: to experience the timeless appeal of older Porsche 2S models combined with contemporary luxury, performance, and technology.

The Genesis of Wiedergeboren

Jason Wenning, after building a successful law firm in Canberra, developed a passion for the Porsche 911 platform and the wider restomod community. This led him to create Wiedergeboren, a name translating to “reborn” in German, to cater specifically to the Australian market. Joining forces with Mark Poole, a former professional racing driver and Porsche specialist based in Adelaide, Wenning set out to bring his vision to life.

The First Build: A 1979 911SC Reimagined

Wiedergeboren’s debut model is based on a 1979 Porsche 2S, carefully chosen as the foundation for a truly exceptional machine. This focus on older models taps into a growing trend of enthusiasts seeking to preserve classic aesthetics while embracing modern enhancements.

Power and Performance

The heart of the Wiedergeboren is a 3.8-liter flat-six engine, derived from a 964-generation 2S. While utilizing many original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components, the engine has been extensively modified. Bespoke internal components, ported heads, custom camshafts, individual throttle bodies, and a ceramic-coated custom exhaust system, all managed by a Motec computer, significantly boost performance. Power output ranges between 225 and 260kW, but the focus is on delivering strong low- to mid-range torque for an engaging driving experience.

The engine’s power is transferred through a strengthened 2S five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Stopping power is provided by Porsche Boxster brakes, while Koni shock absorbers enhance handling and ride quality.

Bespoke Details and Luxurious Appointments

The Wiedergeboren isn’t just about performance; it’s also about exquisite detail. The build team spent eight years refining every aspect of the car to achieve perfection. Handmade leather and tartan seats were crafted in the UK, complementing custom 18-inch alloy wheels from Canada and hand-fabricated body panels.

A Unique Approach to Restomodification

According to Jason Wenning, the Wiedergeboren aims to strike a balance between a traditional “hotrod” feel and enhanced comfort. “In Australia, we have a lot of tired 2S models,” he explained. “I wanted a hotrod 2S, and I wanted to mix a little bit of hotrod with a little bit of comfort.”

Leveraging the G-Series Platform

The choice of the G-Series 2S (built from the 1970s to the late 1980s) was strategic. These models offer a wider availability of chassis compared to 964s locally, facilitating the build process. Additionally, the G-Series allowed for the creation of wider rear wheel arches, perfectly accommodating the stylish deep-dish wheels.

Designed for Driving

Wenning emphasizes that the Wiedergeboren is intended to be enjoyed: “I’ve always loved my Porsches, and I’ve always loved stuff that’s a little bit unique… The idea behind this was to get out and drive it – you can drive it as a daily if you want to – don’t worry about how many [kilometres] you put on it.”

Limited Production and Customization

Wiedergeboren plans to build just 10 vehicles, with each meticulously customized to the owner’s individual specifications. Each build is estimated to cost $1.265 million, plus the price of a G-Series donor car.

With its blend of classic Porsche charm and modern enhancements, the Wiedergeboren represents a significant addition to the growing restomod market, offering a truly unique and exclusive driving experience.
