Volkswagen Golf 9 and ID. Golf: A Gradual Evolution, Not Revolution

15

Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ninth generation Golf, alongside its electric counterpart, the ID. Golf. The company’s latest strategy emphasizes a smoother transition between combustion and electric models, avoiding the radical design splits seen with the ID.3.

Design Continuity: Familiarity Over Reinvention

The first official silhouette of the Golf 9 reveals a design closely aligned with current and previous generations. Under the leadership of VW design boss Andreas Mindt, the approach mirrors the recent Polo redesign: evolutionary rather than revolutionary. This means buyers will recognize the Golf’s core shape, a deliberate move to maintain brand consistency.

Production Shifts and Market Strategy

The internal-combustion Golf will continue production in Mexico starting in 2027, while the gas-powered Polo is now manufactured in South Africa. This signals a shift away from parallel development for gas and electric cars. VW intends to consolidate its efforts, ensuring a clearer product lineup. The combustion Golf could remain available alongside the ID. Golf for an extended period, potentially receiving significant facelifts to coincide with the electric model’s launch.

The ID. Golf and the Return of Physical Controls

The electric ID. Golf, teased alongside the conventional model, will also retain a degree of design familiarity. Volkswagen is responding to consumer feedback by reintroducing physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console, moving away from touchscreen-dominated interiors. A selectable “retro mode” for the digital gauges and touchscreen, inspired by the original Golf Mk1, could further enhance the connection to the car’s heritage.

Broader Electric Plans: ID. Polo and ID. Up

The transition extends beyond the Golf. The ID. Polo is slated for release in late April 2026, with prototypes already demonstrating a design that doesn’t stray too far from the existing gas-powered version. Simultaneously, Volkswagen is preparing the small ID. Every1, possibly rebranded as the ID. Up, for a 2027 launch.

Volkswagen’s strategy prioritizes incremental change over disruptive redesigns, aiming to retain customer loyalty while navigating the shift to electric vehicles. The continued production of both combustion and electric models suggests a long-term commitment to diverse powertrains.
