Kia Teases Potential Stinger Replacement: A New Electric Sports Sedan

Kia has released a shadowy teaser image of a sleek, four-door electric vehicle that could signal the arrival of a successor to the discontinued Stinger sedan. The preview, shared on social media, has ignited speculation about a new performance-focused model in Kia’s lineup.

Design and Proportions

The teaser reveals a dramatically sloped roofline and a long wheelbase with minimal overhangs. These proportions suggest a departure from the Stinger’s traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, pointing instead toward an all-electric powertrain. The vehicle’s profile is almost supercar-like, with a heavily reclined windshield flowing seamlessly into the roof.

The design also features muscular shoulders reminiscent of the EV4 and distinctive daytime running lights that extend from the front into the camera-based door mirrors. Inside, a steering yoke is visible, indicating a steer-by-wire system with variable gearing, similar to that found in the Lexus RZ.

Positioning and Potential Name

Kia has not yet confirmed the vehicle’s name or reveal date, but industry observers suggest it could be positioned between the EV6 and EV9 as an EV7 or EV8. This aligns with previous statements from Kia President Ho Sung Song, who has expressed interest in creating a high-performance electric halo car to elevate the brand’s image.

The Stinger Legacy

The potential successor arrives as the Stinger, once Kia’s flagship performance model, was discontinued in 2023 after modest sales. The original Stinger, launched in 2017, was a significant turning point for the brand, offering a rear-wheel-drive fastback with tuning from former BMW M engineers and a choice of powerful engines. Despite critical acclaim, its market performance was limited.

Uncertain Future

Kia’s recent delay of the high-performance EV9 GT due to “market conditions” raises questions about the viability of high-priced electric models. Whether the new sports sedan will succeed as a full EV or potentially adopt a range-extender hybrid configuration remains to be seen. The market’s response will dictate whether this vehicle can recapture the spirit of the Stinger or forge a new path for Kia’s performance ambitions.
