Kia is weighing the possibility of a performance-focused GT variant for its new EV2 compact crossover, potentially positioning it as a competitor to upcoming rivals like the Volkswagen ID Polo GTI.
Expansion of Kia’s GT Lineup
The EV2, recently revealed at the Brussels motor show, joins Kia’s growing lineup of dedicated electric vehicles. Notably, Kia has already introduced GT versions for its EV3, EV4, and EV5 models – meaning most of its EV range now includes a high-performance option. When questioned about an EV2 GT, Alex Papapetropolous, Kia Europe’s planning boss, confirmed that while the initial launch will focus on Air and Earth trims (with a GT Line following in June), the company is open to future expansion.
“We’re looking at life-cycle animations on EV2, and it’s a segment that customers are very keen and receptive to have those life-cycle updates in, so we’re looking at adding more trims in the future.”
Technical Challenges and Potential Solutions
A key challenge lies in the EV2’s platform. Unlike the larger Kia EVs, its current architecture doesn’t support a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. This means any EV2 GT would likely retain a front-wheel-drive configuration, potentially limiting the scope for significant power upgrades.
However, Kia emphasizes that its GT models aren’t solely about raw power. The company is shifting focus toward “everyday performance,” with enhancements to handling, cornering, and overall driving dynamics. This approach would align the EV2 GT with the tradition of front-driven hot hatches, proving that performance isn’t solely about the drivetrain.
Implications for the EV Market
The potential addition of an EV2 GT signals Kia’s commitment to offering a diverse range of electric vehicles, catering to both mainstream and performance-oriented buyers. This move reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry: as EV adoption grows, manufacturers are increasingly expanding their high-performance electric offerings. While front-wheel drive may present limitations, Kia’s focus on handling and everyday usability could make an EV2 GT a compelling option for driving enthusiasts.
Ultimately, the EV2 GT would add another layer to Kia’s increasingly competitive EV lineup.
