Mercedes-Benz is developing a new, aggressively styled AMG variant of the CLE coupe, powered by a potent V8 engine. This vehicle marks the second model under the automaker’s ultra-exclusive Mythos sub-brand, signaling a return to high-displacement performance for enthusiasts.
Power and Performance
The upcoming CLE will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, potentially delivering up to 650 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain represents a significant step up in performance compared to the recently introduced four-cylinder hybrid C63, which drew criticism for deviating from AMG’s traditional high-performance formula.
Mythos Sub-Brand
Mercedes launched the Mythos line in 2022 as a low-volume, ultra-luxury division. The first Mythos vehicle, the PureSpeed, was limited to just 250 units. The new V8-powered CLE continues this strategy of exclusive, high-performance offerings.
Design and Testing
Recent images released by Mercedes show the CLE undergoing winter testing in Sweden. Despite heavy camouflage, the vehicle’s aggressive design is evident: it features a wider track, a prominent lower grille, and a substantial rear wing. Mercedes describes the model as “extreme” and suggests it may receive a unique name to distinguish it from standard CLE variants.
Course Correction
The development of this V8-powered CLE is widely seen as a response to the backlash against the four-cylinder hybrid C63. By reintroducing a traditional high-performance engine, Mercedes aims to satisfy enthusiasts and reaffirm its commitment to powerful AMG models. The company has not yet confirmed production numbers, but expects the V8 to be available in other AMG models.
The return to V8 power in the CLE signals a shift in Mercedes-Benz’s strategy, catering to demand for high-performance vehicles with unmistakable sound and character. This move acknowledges the market’s preference for visceral driving experiences over fuel efficiency alone.
