Polestar is set to release a more practical version of its popular Polestar 4 model, leaning into the demand for versatile, wagon-style vehicles. The new variant will be marketed simply as the “Polestar 4,” while the original coupe SUV will be rebadged as the “Polestar 4 Coupe.”
Return of the Rear Window
The most striking change is the reintroduction of a glass rear window. The original Polestar 4 controversially replaced the rear glass with cameras to maximize interior space, but the new estate version appears to adopt a more conventional design. This shift suggests Polestar is responding to customer feedback, as some buyers prefer the functionality and visibility of a traditional rear window.
Practicality and Performance
The new Polestar 4 is expected to retain the existing powertrain options: a 268-horsepower Single Motor layout or a more powerful 536-horsepower Dual Motor setup. Though likely to be slightly less efficient than the coupe model due to increased weight and altered aerodynamics, the estate will still offer competitive range figures.
Market Positioning and Customer Demand
Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller acknowledges that the new model blurs the lines between estate, SUV, and crossover categories, similar to vehicles like the Audi Allroad or Volvo Cross Country. The decision to expand the 4 lineup stems from its success as Polestar’s best-selling model globally.
“Some people want a bit more functionality and practicality… some people have dogs, for example,” Lohscheller stated, highlighting the demand for a more versatile vehicle.
Production and Pricing
The Polestar 4 estate will be built alongside the coupe version at the Renault-Geely joint factory in Busan, South Korea. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but the estate model may carry a premium over the current Polestar 4 Coupe, which starts at £55,750 for the Single Motor version and £67,750 for the Dual Motor.
The new Polestar 4 demonstrates the company’s willingness to adapt to customer preferences. By offering both a radical, windowless coupe and a more conventional estate variant, Polestar aims to capture a broader segment of the electric vehicle market.
