At its recent technology day in Beijing, battery manufacturer Sunwoda Power signaled a major strategic shift. The company unveiled a diverse product roadmap that moves beyond simple energy density, focusing instead on extreme charging speeds, specialized hybrid solutions, and the integration of sodium-ion technology and Artificial Intelligence.

The Race for Speed: 9-Minute Full Recharges

The centerpiece of the announcement is the Xingchi Supercharge Battery 2.0. This Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack is designed to tackle one of the biggest hurdles in EV adoption: charging anxiety.

By achieving a 15C charging rate, the battery can perform a massive leap in energy levels in minutes:
5% to 95% charge in just 9 minutes.
5% to 75% charge in just 5.5 minutes.

To support this incredible speed, the pack utilizes a high-voltage architecture (844.8 V) and can handle a maximum current of 1,800 A. Crucially for consumers, Sunwoda stated that using these ultra-fast charging capabilities will not void the battery’s warranty.

This rapid progression—moving from 4C in 2022 to 15C today—reflects a broader industry trend where manufacturers are prioritizing “refueling speed” to make the electric driving experience feel as seamless as traditional gasoline refueling.

Diversifying the Portfolio: Hybrids and Commercial Use

Sunwoda is not focusing solely on pure electric vehicles (EVs). The company introduced specialized solutions for different segments of the transport market:

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs): Using large cylindrical cells, Sunwoda launched range-balanced packs that can charge from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes. These are designed to provide a reliable electric buffer for hybrid systems.
  • Commercial Vehicles: To support heavy-duty transport, the company presented a dual-gun charging system capable of a massive 1.44 MW peak power.

Sodium-Ion: The Cost-Effective Alternative

According to Xu Zhongling, President of Sunwoda’s Central Research Institute, sodium batteries offer several strategic advantages:
1. Resource Abundance: Sodium is significantly more plentiful and cheaper than lithium.
2. Extreme Durability: The cells can achieve over 20,000 cycles at room temperature.
3. Enhanced Safety: They offer superior stability compared to both LFP and ternary lithium chemistries.

Note: Because sodium-ion batteries have lower energy density, they are unlikely to power long-range luxury EVs, but they are ideal for entry-level vehicles and stationary energy storage systems.

The Future: AI Integration and Solid-State Research

Sunwoda is also looking toward the “brains” behind the battery. Through its “AI+ battery” strategy, the company aims to use artificial intelligence to optimize everything from R&D and manufacturing to real-time lifecycle management.

Furthermore, the company continues to invest in solid-state battery prototypes. With a target of 400 Wh/kg and a range of up to 1,000 km, this technology represents the next “holy grail” of the industry, promising even higher safety and density than current liquid-electrolyte batteries.
