Mercedes-Benz is preparing updates for its high-selling GLE-class and GLS-class SUVs for the 2027 model year. Recent prototype drives in Nevada reveal key changes coming to both vehicles, focusing on interior tech, engine refinement, and subtle exterior styling adjustments.
Interior Overhaul: Superscreen & Enhanced Comfort
The most noticeable update is the integration of Mercedes’ Superscreen, a single glass panel housing three integrated displays running the next-generation MBUX infotainment system. This includes new welcome animations, generative AI features, and Google Maps-based navigation.
Beyond tech, interior comfort is upgraded with circular air vents, redesigned steering wheel controls, and optional vibrating massage seats, plus 3D-effect seat upholstery designs in new colors like Beech Brown. The updated electrical architecture prioritizes cybersecurity and over-the-air updates.
Powertrain Tweaks: Inline-Six & V-8 Refinements
Under the hood, the GLE will receive an updated inline-six engine, including a plug-in hybrid variant. The GLS will benefit from a tweaked V-8, likely mirroring the 2027 S-class’s engine, which may produce up to 530 horsepower. Test drives indicate both powertrains deliver smooth, responsive performance.
Ride Quality & Suspension Enhancements
Mercedes has tweaked the Airmatic air suspension, now standard on the GLS and optional for certain GLE models, to further improve ride comfort. An optional active anti-roll system with a Curve mode keeps cornering flat, while a new “Car-to-X” feature anticipates road conditions like speed bumps.
Why This Matters
Mercedes is betting on these updates to maintain sales momentum in the competitive luxury SUV segment. While the company continues to refine its core models rather than launching full redesigns, these changes are strategically aligned with the flagship S-class, ensuring brand consistency and appeal.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS will debut this spring, with sales expected before year-end. These refinements aren’t groundbreaking, but they solidify Mercedes’ position in the luxury market by blending technology, comfort, and performance.
