BYD Unveils 1500kW ‘Flash Charging’ in the UK

It happened at the Uxbridge HQ. Chinese giant BYD didn’t just talk about fast charging—they plugged it in and let us see it.

This is their 1,500k W Flash Charging tech. Officially here. It adds hundreds of miles to an EV’s range in five minutes. Not half an hour. Not twenty minutes. Five.

They used the Denza Z9 GT for the live demo. This performance sedan is the first car capable of accepting these lightning-quick pulses of energy. The numbers are hard to swallow for traditionalists. Based on a WLTP range of 372 total miles, five minutes on the charger grants 223 more. Nine minutes gets you to 323.

It’s faster than you can grab coffee and check emails.

“The first demonstration of Flash Charging in the US is another significant landmark for the technology” — Stella Li, BYD Executive VP (wait, UK, obviously. The quote says UK, my head said US, apologies).

Actually, she said: “Flash Charging’s ability to make our Blade Battery ready in five minutes, full in ninety, and to add just three [minutes?] in cold weather sets a standard for premium mobility.”

That cold-weather stat is interesting. Usually, batteries hate the freeze. BYD seems to have smoothed that out. Or at least claims to. The Denza brand leans into tech that inspires. Stella Li thinks watching the Z9 GT gulp electricity is inspiring. I’d call it efficient.

There are fewer barriers left to electric car adoption. Range anxiety was one. Charging speed was the next. This feels like BYD knocking the table.

Why bother waiting when the future arrives in under ten minutes?
