They built one.
Officially. At the SAIC Motor plant in Zhengzhou. The first MG 07 has rolled off the line. According to Autohome this means volume manufacturing is now real.
It’s a big moment.
Actually.
It marks the 3 millionth car ever made at this facility.
Big numbers. Engineers are still tweaking things too. They have to keep up with the new MG 4X crossover coming next. It’s a busy shop.
What’s under the hood
The electric models run on a Shanghai Automotive Transmission motor. Model number TZ185XY1161? No, it’s TZ185XY1181. Sharp memory pays off. It pushes out 176 kW of power. That’s decent. But the real story is the battery.
MG is promising 650 km of electric range.
The CLTC standard says 610 to 650 km depending on the spec. There is talk of a “650 km platform.” Maybe it hits it. Maybe it doesn’t.
There’s more.
Leaked patents show a wagon version of this architecture exists too. Why didn’t anyone say? If you prefer gas there’s a plug-in hybrid option. A 1.5-liter SAIC engine teams up with a 152 kW motor. It gives you a choice: a BEV range of 650 km or a plug-in option with 185 km of electric driving.
Lots of choices.
Brain and bones
The car thinks with a Momenta R7 system. It uses neural simulation architecture. That sounds sci-fi but it works with a laser radar on the roof.
This system handles active urban navigate-on-pilot features.
It drives you on regional highways. Basically.
The shape is sleek. Low slung liftback. Looks premium. Expensive. Maybe not though. It is 4886 mm long, 1900 mm wide, 1478 mm tall. The wheelbase is 2825 mm.
Long.
This gives rear passengers more legroom while keeping the car stable. Engineering usually compromises one for the other. MG says no. We take both.
The money part
Price matters.
This fastback targets the 150,00 to 200,000 Yuan range. Roughly $22,000 to $30,000.
Cheap for a car with a lidar?
SAIC moved fast. They built their last million vehicles in under 23 months at this hub. They need this capacity. The MG 4X is waiting for delivery ramps. Production must stay hot.
Will people buy it?
Only time will tell. The lines are open.
