Why the Hybrid Lexus GX is staying away

25

The new Lexus GX hybrid is coming soon.

Not to Australia.

It’s happening elsewhere in the world. But local plans? None.

A petrol-electric version of this body-on-frame SUV was hinted at during the 2023 global debut. Back then they called it a Lexus first for this kind of truck. By earlier this year they had trademarked GX550h in North America. A clear signal. Hybrid tech is coming to the range.

Local product planning manager Julian Meldrum confirmed the reality at the RZ launch in Melbourne.

“It’s in a couple markets globally… we’ve looked into it.”

They looked. They didn’t like it.

Meldrum says the hybrid is compromised for our expectations.

Think about what you lose.
– Reduced towing capacity.
– Less power.
– Lower torque.
– A cargo bay ruined by battery humps.

The GX550 here gets a twin-turbo V6. That thing pushes out 260kW and 650Nm.

The hybrid?

It borrows the setup from the Toyota Prado (the US Land Cruiser 250). A 2.4L turbo four-pot paired with an electric motor.

The math doesn’t sing.
243kW.
630Nm.

You get 17kW less. 20Nm less.

And towing? The hybrid is limited to 6000lb. Roughly 2720kg.

The standard GX Sports Luxury can tow 3130kg.
The Luxury and Overtrail trim levels? Up to 3500kg.

That’s a heavy trade-off for a few grams of CO2.

“The main one for me is the battery… that would be introduced as part of of that powertrain.”

If you know the Prado. You know the boot floor is high. There’s a hump where the battery hides.

The current GX has a flat cargo floor. Clean. Simple. Useful.

So why bring in a box with less space, less grunt, and less pull?

Lexus doesn’t see it delivering the best product for local customers right now.

But don’t lock the door just yet.

Regulations change everything.

The Australian New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) is real now. Strict laws. Fines for missing CO2 targets.

Maybe the hybrid isn’t bad enough to ignore forever. It lowers emissions. That helps Lexus’s fleet average.

They might need it eventually.

Or they might just sell out.

“The GX is unique… driving a lot of conquest from other.”

Demand is high. Orders are full. They are winning against rival brands.

Maybe the V6 is enough for a while longer.

Or maybe the environment will force their hand.

Who knows.
